Fair Price for Garage Insulation?

We live in a 50 year old split level house and are looking to have our garage insulated along 2 walls and the ceiling. It will require demolition of the old ceiling, framing the walls, insulating and finishing with drywall (no taping)

We’ve been quoted $1400 for materials and $1500 for labour (Canadian). This is from a neighbourhood handyman. Does this sound fair?
Thanks for the answers so far – I do think we’ll be getting another quote (although ironically this quote was from one of our neighbours)

We’re planning on insulating between the house and the garage – so we plan on doing the 2 interior walls and the roof (which is also the floor of our bedroom)

It sounds fairly reasonable to me but if you are unsure get one or two more quotes
labour cost are usually about the same price as materials

What is the best insulation for forced hot water copper pipes?

I have some copper pipes used for forced hot water heat that run in an unheated area behind an upstairs wall. I want to insulate the pipes because the heat they throw off cause ice dams on my roof, and also, I want to save money by keeping the heat in and prevent them from possibly freezing. I’ve seen three types of insulation for pipes:
- a styrofoam kind that is very cheap in price.
- a rubber kind that is expensive but looks to be higher quality.
- a fiberglass kind that is just a bit less expensive than the rubber kind.
I’m not sure what is the best type to keep the heat in the pipes and protect them from freezing as well.

admin answers:

Insultube, made to go over the pipes is the best, sold in 5′ lengths. Most comes pre-slit just slide it onto the pipe and seal off all the joints with duct tape. R value I believe is 3 so if freezing is a concern you may want to have anti-freeze added to your boiler system.

Am I getting good deal for Insulation?

I am planning to insulate 3 flats. They currently have low ceilings, but I wish to restore them to original height (less about 1 foot for insulation). Total area of flats are about 700 square foot each. I have had quote for £ 5300 to remove old low ceilings, create new ceilings with Rockwool insulation and then the celings will be skimmed. Is it decent price?

admin answers:

You don’t say how much height the ceilings are now and how high it will be when they are raised .. ..you could fix tri iso 10 ..this is a multi layer insulation ..approx 25mm thick that you can fix to the underside of joist and is the equivalent of 250mm of insulation ..and is acceptable by building control ..and it works really well ..as for your question..its not a bad price

Can I add reflective attic insulation to the inside of my roof, between the rafters?

I live in central florida. I plan on installing R-30 insulation to the floor of my attic. How effective is it to install reflective insulation to the attic on the roof side? Is it worth the price?

admin answers:

Do not insulate your roof,it will cause the roof to get VERY hot, this will damage the roofing, shorten its life,,the temp in your attic should be within 3-4 deg of outside temp,,,insulate the floor Only and have plenty of ventilation

Shelley asks…

I live in Arizona, and want to add insulation to my attic.?

R-49 is recommended, and I am told I have blown in R-19.
Heat is unbearable, and my AC bill gets excessive every summer… 400% higher than in the winter!!!
I plan to add insulation, and I saw the price (@ HD) at .27c per sq.ft for R-13, and .47c per sq.ft for R-19… I can probably only afford R-13 for the whole house… but will it be enough to make a difference? Should I charge to get R-19? (Basically the question is, is the difference from R-13 to R-19 worth the 20 cents per sq.ft???

Thanks!

admin answers:

I would recommend the R-19 and only do as much as your budget permits. You can always add to it when more money is available.
Add it directly ontop of the existing insulation.
